SETsquared’s central team is led by the Innovation Director, Simon Bond. It supports all the activities of the Partnership in working with academia, industry, students and start-ups to generate economic growth. It assists each of our five centres in their recruitment and support for entrepreneurs. The central team is the first point of contact for media, industry and investment enquiries. It also co-ordinates all PR and marketing activities. The team manages this website, introductions to our business support community and any regional or national events. 

Simon Bond

 

Simon is Innovation Director of SETsquared, the award-winning enterprise partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. He is also Director of the University of Bath Innovation Centre (www.ubic.org.uk) which helps accelerate the growth of technology-based companies both from the University's research base and from the private sector and has founded a portfolio of networks to support business innovation - these include Silicon South West, Low Carbon South West, the open Mobile Innovation Camp, and the Assisted Living Action Network. He is a Director of the UK Electronics Alliance, ESCO.
 
Simon leads the Bath Entrepreneurship Programme business plan training course which is based on the practical experience and track record of SETsquared and the Innovation Centre.

Karen Brooks

Karen Brooks

Karen is the Programme Director for the SETsquared Partnership having devised and run their incubation and entrepreneurship training activities for the last fourteen years. She led the team that developed the world’s number one University Incubation Programme which has provided support to over 1,000 early stage technology companies which have raised over £1bn in investment.

Karen has built the SETsquared enterprise brand for the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey, which has provided over £3.8bn of economic impact to the UK economy. Karen has been key in the development of overseas relations in the US with technology support organisations such as MIT, Massachusetts Technology Transfer Centre, CONNECT, Global CONNECT, T2 Venture Capital and Austin Technology Incubator. Relationships with these organisations provide a springboard platform for European startups to access the US markets.

Karen has created and delivered a number of experiential training programmes to allow participants to develop entrepreneurial thinking and form credible business propositions from the seeds of an idea. She has been involved in start-up weekends, appathons, Microsoft Imagine Cup, pitching competitions and researcher focused entrepreneurship programmes. Karen has sat on the judging panel for many business pitch competitions in the UK and overseas and assessed hundreds of business propositions seeking for investment. She is also a mentor the Duke of York’s [email protected].

Karen has also worked for Motorola, Compass Group and Micro Focus in strategic  communications activities and project management roles. She has over 25 years of marketing, communications and PR experience in a range of industries including IT, Telecoms and FMCG.

Karen holds a degree in Computer Science, a foundation in Psychotherapy and is PRINCE2 qualified.

Hugo Armitage

Hugo Armitage

Hugo has consulted to SETsquared since May 2004, initially assisting in the administration of the Mentor programme. He then moved on to manage the implementation of the new SETsquared website and online workflow management tool and continues to manage all technical issues relating to the website, workflow and central team.

Hugo's initial IT experience was in network administration. He has been an IT Manager for various companies including a sports marketing company, a plc, and an ASP. He then founded his own technology company targeting SoHo's and SME's offering a broad range of technology solutions.
