The aims of the SETsquared Partnership are threefold; to accelerate the growth of high-tech start-up companies through our five business incubation centres, to develop the entrepreneurial talents of the students at our five partner Universities and help academic researchers realise the commercial impact of their work.
Business Acceleration Centres & Start-up Support
SETsquared operates five Business Acceleration Centres, based on or near each of our partner universities campus’ at Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. The centres provide space and support for early-stage, high-growth potential technology ventures to help them develop into viable trading businesses. 80% of the companies we incubate are from the external business world, 20% originate from within the universities.
Each start-up that comes through our centres will be given a bespoke package of support, which will include:
- access to industry specialists, investors, business mentors and guidance from centre-based experts
- regular business review panel
- physical office space and facilities if required or virtual membership for start-ups who wish to access our services without the desk space.
In 2012 alone, SETsquared helped companies raise £34 million, in the midst of one of the most severe recessions since the 1920s and over the last 10 years this figure rises to over £1 billion investment and finance raised. Find out more about our Start-up Support Services.

Some of the world’s most disruptive technologies have originated from University research - it has and will continue to change our business and technology landscape. Government is increasingly seeking to ensure that the impact of University research is realised for social as well as commercial benefit. SETsquared alongside our partner universities is helping to facilitate this process by putting in place a number of schemes and programmes which not only are helping researchers to work more innovatively but also to ensure external business is able to tap into the resources and expertise available within universities.
