Exploring the future of connectivity

The UK’s telecoms sector is thriving. Vital to society and the broader economy, it delivers the infrastructure on which we build every aspect of our digital lives. From new technological solutions that will be able to meet future digital demands to capturing investor interest, there is a wealth of commercial opportunities within the telecoms industry, including AI, quantum computing and cyber security.

During the Future Connectivity 2025 webinar, UKTIN brought experts together to discuss critical trends and insights for 2025, available opportunities and how to overcome barriers to accessing the multifaceted telecoms industry. We were joined by Ian Smith, Head of UKTIN, Lia Tzifa, Head of Networks Presales UK & Ireland at Ericsson and Chris Pett, Sector Specialist and Business Advisor, SETsquared, to give their expert insights to an audience of deep-tech start-ups.

Ian Smith opened the webinar with a sector overview, starting with a timeline of advances spanning digital switching in the 1970s to 5G networks in the 2020s, and 12 key future trends moving forward. Ian stated,Telecoms Technology and its applications continues to evolve rapidly, with trends being shaped by innovations in connectivity, customer demands, and the increasing convergence of telecoms with other sectors”.

Following the sector overview, Lia gave Ericsson’s insight into the world of limitless connectivity which focussed on 5G being the platform of innovation, bringing benefits to people, business and society, and being central to UK growth. For example, by supporting public services, and underpinning transition to net-zero carbon emissions. Lia ended with key themes for 2025 including service differentiation, widespread 5G SA and midband coverage and programmable networks, before handing over to Chris Pett to look at business opportunities and overcoming challenges.

Here, Chris uncovered three emerging themes: sustainability, resilience and quality followed by key emerging business opportunity areas, which included NTN (space applications), network management, AI, photonics/fibre and quantum. After highlighting the business opportunities and overcoming challenges, Chris gave trailblazer case studies from Finchetto, Quantum Dice and Ethicronics, all of whom have received fully funded business support from the UKTIN Transforming Telecoms Programme.
