Businesses could go into orbit via a space data competition with SETsquared.

Companies are invited to make a one-minute video pitching their ideas for a new product or service to incorporate space data, which could include GPS or satellite imagery.

The SETsquared Partnership, which specialises in growing high-tech start-ups through its incubation programme, is offering a fantastic prize package, worth £5000, to the winner.

This includes a fast track place at SETsquared’s Innovation Incubator at the Space Innovation Congress; a free place on a SETsquared three-day Entrepreneurship Programme and a one year free virtual membership for SETsquared’s Space Incubator. Part of their programme for space supported by the UK Space Agency.

As well as the grand prize, everyone who enters the competition automatically receives a 20% discount on tickets to the Space Innovation Congress, to be held in London on 7 and 8 April. Adrian Braine, entrepreneur in residence at SETsquared’s hub in Basingstoke, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for enterprising businesses to gain a head start in the hugely expanding area of space data technology.

“There’s already a huge array of data available from satellites in space and this is leading the way ahead. The biggest growth area for the space sector over the coming years is set to be in downstream technologies, taking information and imagery available from satellites, combining it with terrestrial-based intelligence and then doing something new with it.

“I hope SETsquared’s competition will inspire and encourage businesses to put their ideas forward and demonstrate how they can use space data to solve issues facing businesses today.”

The competition is open to businesses of all sizes, as data from space can be used to develop new products and services or enhance existing technologies to reach new markets. Space data is particularly relevant to those in agriculture, transport, app development, weather, telecoms, location-based services and mapping sectors.

The closing date is 18th March 2016.
